The tiny Northumbrian village of Felton is located 10 miles south of Alnwick and 9 miles north of Morpeth. The earliest record of racing taking place in the vicinity of Felton was a 2 day meeting on Thursday 5th and Friday 6th October 1758 at Moulshaugh, when a Purse of Gold was contested each day. Entries were made at the Rose and Crown, Felton and dinner was served at the same venue after racing. There was then a lapse in racing until a prolonged period of sport began in 1856 and continued for each of the next 6 years, with a final meeting on Monday 6th October 1862. The opening event at the final meeting was the Coquetside Stakes, while the feature race was the Felton Handicap won by the well-supported Peggy Taft. The crowd were further entertained throughout the meeting by the Felton Brass Band.
